Becoming An UNSTOPPABLE Church
FOCUS TEXT: Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 2:42-47
At Anchor Church, our mission is simple but profound: to make disciples. This is not just an idea we’ve adopted; it’s the commission Jesus gave to His followers before ascending into heaven. In Matthew 28:18-20, He said: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Jesus emphasized this mission again in Acts 1:8, where He promised the power of the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses “in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Everything we do at Anchor Church flows from this commission. Our purpose is clear: glorify God by making disciples of Jesus, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Anchored in Devotion: Following the Early Church’s Example
The early church in Acts 2 gives us a model for how to live out this mission. Acts 2:42 describes their devotion: “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” They committed to God’s Word, to fellowship, to worshiping Christ—especially in communion—and to seeking Him through prayer. These weren’t mere rituals; they were life-giving practices that moved their hearts to action. And the results were extraordinary. Acts 2:43-47 tells us that their devotion produced awe, unity, generosity, joy, favor in the community, and, most importantly, lives transformed as the Lord added daily to their number those who were being saved. This picture of the early church reminds us that devotion to Christ isn’t just about going through the motions—it’s about being moved by the Spirit to live for Him fully. It’s about pulling the rope together as a church family, not out of obligation, but out of hearts that delight in Jesus and are transformed by His Spirit.
Avoiding Spiritual Stagnation
Sadly, it’s possible to do all the right things outwardly and still miss the heart of worship and mission. Churches can hear the Word, fellowship, take communion, and pray—and yet remain stagnant or even dying. Why? Because activity without transformation misses the point. True devotion springs from encountering Jesus, being filled with His Spirit, and delighting in Him every day. As Jesus warns in Matthew 7:23, some will do many religious works only to hear, “I never knew you.” Wholehearted obedience and devotion rooted in love and delight in the Lord are what He desires.
Becoming a Disciple-Making Church
Three years ago, we began our ministry here at Anchor Church by looking at Acts 1 and 2, exploring what it means to be an “Unstoppable Church.” Today, we’re still striving to be a kingdom-focused, Christ-following, Spirit-led, and Gospel-proclaiming church that makes disciples of all peoples—from our neighborhood to the nations. This isn’t about formulas for church growth; it’s about hearts transformed by encountering Jesus. When we delight in Him, our lives will bear the fruit of Acts 2:43-47.
