Pastor of Discipleship

Full Time Position

The Pastor of Discipleship serves as an integral part our plan to equip Anchor Church to make disciples who make disciples. This role includes serving as a part of our Elder team and assuming responsibilities outlined in this job description.

Anchor Church is in a season of rebuilding. A year ago we called a visionary Senior Pastor who, along with our Elder team, is unfolding a new vision for the church. The Pastor of Discipleship role is designed to be a complementary and collaborative partner in helping Anchor become a healthy & fruitful disciple making church.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a self-starter who will quickly catch vision, collaborate on ministry strategy, and take lead on executing plans. We’re looking for someone with strong experience recruiting, equipping and managing teams, establishing new discipleship systems, leading through transitions and providing administrative oversight. Candidates must meet the qualifications of an Elder, be ordained to pastor in a SBC church, have the heart of a shepherd, and possess the gift of administration.

Job Responsibilities

  • Set and maintain standards for team leaders

  • Recruit, equip, resource and encourage volunteers & team leaders

  • Build collaborative culture among teams

  • Align all discipleship ministries with the vision of Anchor Church

  • Serve as a catalyst to bring adults onto our discipleship pathway

  • Build out discipleship pathway to include discipleship groups, equip classes & leadership learning cohorts.

  • Serve as a champion and leader for next generation and family ministries.

The role will focus on implementing and leading discipleship ministries for preschoolers, children, students, and adults. In this season of transition the Senior Pastor and Pastor of Discipleship will work together within their gifts to ideate, cast vision, and establish & maintain ministry.

The vision for Anchor’s adult discipleship pathway is in place. The plan relies heavily on home based discipleship groups but also includes supplemental equip classes focusing on assimilation, disciple-maker training, theological education and missional training. The plan includes the identification of people in leadership roles to participate in cohorts designed prepare them for vocational ministry, Eldership, church planting, or the mission field.

We launched discipleship groups Fall of 2022 and we’re adding equip classes and learning cohorts in 2023/24. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to execute our vision. The Pastor of Discipleship will be heavily involved in building the pathway out over the next few years.

Anchor Church is also in the process of re-envisioning and redeveloping next generation and family ministries. The Pastor of Discipleship will collaborate with the Senior Pastor to redevelop these ministries. Once implemented this role will oversee ministry teams discipling preschoolers, children and youth.

Additional responsibilities are mostly connected to the functions of an Elder. These responsibilities include preaching plan development, regular preaching (15-20%), budgeting, worship planning, vision and ministry plan development, execution of vision and ministry plan, pastoral care, and prayer ministry.
